Windhoek in 3D

Windhoek is the capital of Namibia. The city is located in the Khomas highlands with more than 1600 meteres above the sea level just close to the geographical centre of the country. It is the economical, political and cultural centre of the country. Windhoek has more than 300 000 inhabitants who come from all regions of the country. In the multicultural metropolis live Ovambo, Damara, Herero, Nama, Kavango, San, Himba, Caprivians, Rehoboth Baster and Whites in peace with one another. English is the official language of Namibia, but Afrikaans is also commonly speaking by most Namibians. Windhoek is considered as one of the safest and cleanest city in Africa.

The airport

Hosea Kutako International Airport is Namibia's largest airport with over one million passengers a year, which is used by most tourists as their arrival in Namibia. The airport is 40 kilometers east of Windhoek.

The largest metropolis in the country

With around 20% of the total population of Namibia, Windhoek is by far the most important economic center in the country. Nearly all companies based in Namibia have their headquarters in Windhoek, which also results in continued immigration from other parts of the country.

The Zoo Park in the city centre

This park forms the centre of the city. Windhoeker meet each other here to any given time to spend a comfortable moment in the shade. Coffee's and souvenir shops are located nearby.

The main road – Independence Avenue

This road is the main business road in Windhoek. Shopping centres, souvenir outlets, restaurants and many shady seats are situated along the Independence Avenue. At most places sidewalks are roofed.

The pedestrian zone – Post Street Mall

In Post Street Mall tourists and locals can find all they need. In the centre of the street there is a collection of Meteorites. At the end of the Post Street Mall a shopping mall is located – the Wirnhill Park.

Christ Church – The historic landmark of the city

The Christ Church forms the historic city centre and is considered as the historic landmark of Windhoek. Directly nearby are the Alte Feste, the Independece Memorial Museum and the Tintenpalast located, which is enclosed by a public park.

The Independence Memorial Museum

In this museum the history of Namibia is shown. Numerous pictures and exhibitions keep records of the colonization by the Germans, the Apartheid regime by South Africa and the Namibian liberation struggle for independence.

The Tintenpalast

The Tintenpalast serves as the seat of the Namibian parliament and is enclosed by a public park. On the upper stairs of the Parliament building you have a great view onto the City of Windhoek.

The train station

From the train station all important cities of Namibia can be reached. The luxurious Desert Express travelles regularly to Swakopmund. In front of the train station building old railway locomotives are shown.

Shopping in Windhoek

Windhoek has three large shopping centers. In the city center of Wernhil Park, on the exhibition grounds the Maerua Mall and in the south of the city the Grove Mall.

Heroes' Acre

In the south of the city Windhoek is the National Monument of Namibia. It serves to cultivate patriotism and national consciousness and to pass on the heritage to future generations of Namibia.
